The school district is primarily rural. Residents, who work in the community, work in light industry, agriculture, logging, printing, stone-cutting, health-care, retail and education. Many travel to Binghamton and its surrounding area for work.
Businesses and services located in Deposit include a pharmacy, gift shop, restaurants, bank, telephone company, antique shops, hair salons, tailor and two motels. A new Industrial Park is located just outside the village limits.
Deposit has a wealth of freshwater streams, ponds and lakes for fishing and hundreds of acres of flat land and mountains for cross-country skiing, hiking and hunting. The West Branch of the Delaware River is a haven for fly fishing, canoeing and bald eagle watching.
Deposit is located at the junction of State Routes 8, 10, and 17 (the future Interstate 86).
